Now that I think about it I got a mini the second time i met nicholas, so not so unlucky...but still...I don't want to get gifts to try my luck until I know if medals would be more useful

wish they wouldn't shove junk in something thats not that easy to obtain, i mean really scroll of heroes insight? i got more than that item's worth just killing the monsters for the quest? it seems like everyone has a mini livia cept li'l ol' me QQ.
as long as the collectors stay here forever i'll be fine. and whatever medals of honour are for they'd better not ask for like 50 or something or i'll send devona over to Anet HQ!

The thing that really torques me about these types of ingame things/drops is that they are far too rare and that turns Guild Wars into Grind Wars if you want to try and get something yourself.
Grind Grind Grind for royal gifts and tons of other stupidly rare drop ratios (prof yakkington etc..). It amazes me that Anet can say they want to make a grindless game and then put in stupidly rare drops that people will..GASP..Grind FOR!
/sigh

Opened my first gifts, the ones from the mission. I got nothing so special but also nothing so crappy luckily, an expert salvage kit, 3 lockpicks, 4 rations, 4 brandy and 3 lokum. At least they got some use.
And really, about the scrolls complaint, I'd really want to know what's a lvl 20 char (since I really doubt there's someone below lvl 20 who's got access to wik) supposed to do with them, apart selling for some poor money. At least all the rest has some use, even if it doesn't make you rich (rightfully).

it isn't something that you have to grind for to make you better than other players though. being able to beat the game and hard areas is based on skill. acquiring wealth and rare items will always require grind no matter what game you play

I disagree. The reason there is grind is due to the excessive things that Anet has added. Getting to L20 and beating the campaigns through normal play isn't difficult, outside of a couple missions that are a bit tougher then others. L20 is easily obtainable and that's when the game is supposed to really start and what it's balanced around.
THEN Anet goes and adds in some interesting pve only skills like the asuran stuff but they tag it's effectiveness on to titles that are a grind to get to max level (that's why people speedbooked). If they made the progression of the titles and other things less grindish then that would be a good thing (like a chain of quests you do for the title..that would be far better then "oh hay! tiem to play grindzwarz lol!")

You missed the bolded word. The optional rare stuff is what keeps people playing, hunting, trading, etc. It's not even a weapon, it's a 100% useless mini just for aesthetics, so what are you getting all hot about?

Because. We. BEGGED. For. It.
Maybe you weren't around when titles were added, but it's true. Also: absurdly rare drops and such have been in the game from day one. Crystalline swords? Dwarven axes? Obsidian armor? These were not things that just dropped randomly. Heck, it was a grind just to get a maxed (15^50) weapon that wasn't a collector item. I'll take the situation today, where the most rare items in the game are minis and tonics, over not being able to get cool weapon skins because they're all 100k+.

Well heres the thing about Guild Wars, you dont need all this stuff to play the game and dont need to grind. Why do you need that obo armor when you can get those cheap max armor. Why do you need that sick looking sword. Why do you need to max that title. By putting in the effort you chose to "work hard" (grind) for those things.

The last 250+ gifts made me want to punch my monitor, so I had to brace myself before opening the 8 I got tonight.
MoH... MoH... scroll... scroll... scroll... ID kit... scroll... LIVIA!!
Both monitors survived thanks to Lil' Livia!

Well, took 5 giftes from assassination ... scroll, scroll, scroll, perfect salvage kit, dp removal food.
Somehow, this does not really feel good. Of course, not every drop should be great, Paper Wapped Parcel for example was way too good.
When was last time we actually needed XP? DP removal is now thing of consumables of which everyone has stacks, Never really heard about skillpoints being needed (not with tomes). Survivors?
I wish those scrolls did something usefull, something more 2010y ... like boost for reputation points along with XP or got collector that would turn them to sweets/alcohol/party. Give Wisdom point per use. Anything, really.
